Arctic Winters Are Getting Warmer

The Arctic is warming faster than any other region on Earth. New forecasts from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) show that winter temperatures will rise significantly over the next five years. By 2030, they could average 2.8 degrees Celsius above the 1991–2020 mean. During the previous five-year period, the anomaly was approximately 1.2 degrees Celsius.

According to the WMO’s latest climate report, the Arctic is warming more than three and a half times faster than the global average. One of the main reasons is the loss of snow and sea ice. Normally, the bright ice surfaces reflect a large portion of incoming solar radiation back into space. As the ice melts, darker ocean water is exposed, absorbing more heat and further accelerating the warming process.

Arctic warming is becoming increasingly difficult to slow down.

The consequences of this development are already clearly visible. The years 2024 and 2025 were the warmest on record since modern measurements began in the Arctic. At the same time, the maximum extent of winter sea ice reached a historic low.

The impacts are not limited to the polar region. Scientists warn that rapid Arctic warming could alter global weather patterns, intensify extreme weather events, and accelerate sea-level rise. Experts also expect wetter conditions in Northern Europe, Alaska, and Siberia, while parts of the Amazon region may become drier.

The global outlook is equally concerning. The WMO projects that the global average temperature will temporarily exceed the critical threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels in the coming years.

Climate experts describe the Arctic as Earth’s early warning system. They emphasize that only a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions can slow further warming and prevent severe consequences for both people and the environment.
