May we present: The BEYOND EPICA drill

Dr. Michael Wenger 24. September 2019 | Uncategorized

BEYOND EPICA is the abbreviation for the BEYOND EUROPEAN PROJECT FOR ICE CORING IN ANTARCTICA. This is a drilling project in Antarctica funded by the EU and supported by the USA and Australia. The goal: to obtain a 2.75-kilometre-long ice core that archives the climate history of the past 1.5 million years. The project officially began on June 1, 2019 and is scheduled to run through May 31, 2025. Australia has developed the drill head for the project, a state-of-the-art performance drill made of stainless steel, aluminium bronze and titanium. The video of the Australian Antarctic Division shows the details.
