03 February 2026 – Russia is speaking out more clearly in connection with the evolving security situation in the Arctic. Moscow states that a possible deployment of US weapons systems in Greenland would trigger corresponding responses. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov openly refers to “military-technical countermeasures” and makes clear that the Russian leadership views further militarisation of the High North as a direct threat.

The move comes at a sensitive moment: the last major nuclear arms control agreement between Russia and the United States is approaching its expiration. Russia explicitly links its warning to strategic stability and signals that new US systems in Greenland would not be viewed in isolation, but rather within a broader security-policy context.

Greenland thus once again moves into the geopolitical spotlight. Due to its location between North America, Europe, and the Arctic, the island is playing an increasingly important role in broader security considerations.
