Podcast Radio Arctic – Territorial claims and treaties in polar regions

In polar regions, that area of oceans, ice and land, a wide variety of borders meet. In addition to natural borders, many are man-made and define national and international interests, be they economic, political or scientific. However, some borders and areas are less clearly defined and are at the center of discussions and disputes.
Our partner Radio Arctic, the audio platform for information and discussion about the Arctic and polar regions, explores how the various ambitions about territories and borders and the various treaties that are supposed to guide these ambitions are reconciled, who the key figures in the discussions are and what drives them, and where conflicts, but also collaborations, arise.
Radio Arctic spoke with the following experts:
- Professor Dr. Michael Byers from the University of British Columbia, expert in international law and international relations
- Professor Dr. Camilla Brekke, Director of the Norsk Polarinstitut in Tromsø
- Professor Dr. Klaus Dodds, Executive Dean and Professor at Royal Holloway, University of London, expert on geopolitics, especially in the Arctic
The podcast lasts 56 minutes and is in English.
