Podcast Radio Arctic – Tourism Trajectories

Julia Hager 19. October 2024 | Arctic, Tourism

The Arctic is no longer just a destination for daring explorers and adventurers but has transformed into an increasingly popular tourist destination in recent years. However, not all areas are equally frequented. While some regions see very few or no visitors, others experience a significant run. As in other parts of the world, tourism leaves its mark on the local (indigenous) populations and the environment in the Arctic.

Our partner Radio Arctic, the audio platform for information and discussion about the Arctic and polar regions, explores the question of what the future of tourism in the Arctic could look like. Some measures to reduce the impact on people and nature have already been implemented and others will follow, but they can only be successful if there is a public dialog.

Radio Arctic spoke to several experts about where Arctic tourism is heading:

  • Örn Thor Halldórsson, Nature guide and architect, offering perspectives infrastructures and nature conservation in the Arctic
  • Sævar Kristinsson, Strategy and Foresight Consultant and a project manager at KPMG
  • Naaja H. Nathanielsen, Minister of Business, Trade, Mineral Resources, Justice and Gender Equality, Government of Greenland
  • Maria Høegh Lyberth, Tourism operator in Greenland
  • Pipaluk Stephensen, Tourism operator in Greenland
  • Carina Ren, Head of AAU Arctic and associate professor in tourism and cultural innovation

The podcast is 54 minutes long and in English language.

The podcast, like all Radio Arctic podcasts, is in English language.
