Life is currently renewing itself in the Antarctic and a new generation of penguins, seals and seabirds is growing up – and a fresh breeze is also blowing on the Internet, especially for Polar Journal AG: its popular platform, the website visible here, will be presented at a new web address and with a new look from January 1, 2025.

After more than five years of successful growth and a steadily increasing international readership, Polar Journal AG has decided to relaunch itself. Attracting more than 50,000 monthly visitors from all over the world, the platform has become an important hub for anyone interested in the Arctic and Antarctic.

What exactly will change?

  • New domain extension: polarjournal.ch becomes polarjournal.net. The previous country-specific domains (.ch, .de, .com etc.) will be switched off on January 1, 2025.
  • Modern design: The website will have a more professional, user-friendly design and an optimised structure for even more convenient navigation.
  • Mobile optimization: The new website will be specially optimized for use on mobile devices in order to meet the needs of an increasingly mobile society.
  • Three languages: The articles will continue to appear in German, English and French in order to reach a broad audience.
  • Diverse content: Polar Journal continues to offer an exciting mix of in-depth articles on polar topics, latest news from the polar regions, guest articles, expert opinion and analysis, as well as clearly labeled sponsored articles about partners and their products.
  • Strengthening the cultural sector: Polar Journal will create a separate section that will deal intensively with the cultural aspects in the polar regions.

But not only the look and the website address (domain) are changing. The platform’s offering is also being expanded and some previously independent platforms are being integrated:

  • Polarkreuzfahrten.ch: The previously German-language only portal on polar travel will be integrated into the new platform and will be accessible in all three languages at polarjournal.net/reisen (or .net/voyages and .net/travel). Here, readers will find an extended range of products from partner companies relating to polar travel.
  • Polar Jobs: The job platform will also be part of polarjournal.net and will continue to present job offers and company profiles for all job opportunities in the Arctic and Antarctic at polarjournal.net/jobs.
  • Mobile app: The unique mobile app, which is available free of charge in the Google Play Store and the Apple Store, will be further expanded and strengthened.

New look in 2025 for greater user convenience and technical improvement

‘The previous website is showing its age’ says Dr Michael Wenger, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Polar Journal AG. ‘With the relaunch, we aim to make our platform better equipped for the future and offer our readers an improved user experience.’

The new platform meets the latest technical standards and presents itself in a modern and user-friendly way. ‘It was important to us that the new website is intuitive to use and adapts to the needs of our readers’, Michael Wenger continues. ‘Mobile optimisation plays a crucial role in this, as more and more people are accessing our content via smartphones and tablets.’

By merging the PolarJournal platform with polarkreuzfahrten and Polar Jobs services under the new domain polarjournal.net, the offerings will be bundled and strengthened. “We want to offer our readers a comprehensive portal that covers all aspects of the polar regions,” states Julia Hager, who is responsible for many of the scientific articles and the German-language content at Polar Journal AG. “From current news and travel information to job offers – at polarjournal.net you will find everything your polar heart desires.”

The new domain polarjournal.net also underlines the international orientation of the platform. “With the .net domain, we are signaling that we are targeting a global audience,” says Mirjana Binggeli, a social scientist who is particularly responsible for the social and cultural content. “Polar Journal is the platform for everyone who is interested in the Arctic and Antarctic – no matter where they are in the world.”

Mirjana Binggeli adds: “With the new section for culture, we want to focus even more on the diversity and richness of polar cultures. From indigenous traditions and contemporary art to the effects of climate change on people’s way of life – we want to shed light on the cultural dimension of the polar regions in all its complexity.”

Newsletter with new possibilities

The Polar Journal newsletter is also being optimised. From January 2025, subscribers will be able to register separately for two different newsletters, allowing them to receive even more targeted information that really interests them. On the one hand, the regular Polar Journal newsletter, which is a useful extension of the website in terms of content. On the other hand, the Polar Jobs newsletter will also be offered here for the first time. Those who want to stay up to date on job opportunities in polar regions will find the opportunity on the new platform. It is also possible to unsubscribe separately.

New team structure

Since its launch in 2019, the team has also evolved. From 2025, the experienced polar experts will reorganise their efforts to inspire readers with even more exciting stories, breathtaking images and exclusive insights.

  • Dr Michael Wenger: The co-founder of Polar Journal, who holds a PhD in natural sciences, has been steering the platform’s course since 2022 as CEO and editor-in-chief. He will increasingly focus on strategic and marketing aspects.
  • Mirjana Binggeli: As assistant to the management and co-editorial director, the social scientist is responsible for the strategic development of editorial content. She is also responsible for expanding the cultural section.
  • Ole Ellekrog: The Danish journalist with a master’s degree in journalism, globalization and media will strengthen the journalistic section as co-editorial director.
  • Camille Lin: He is a French journalist specializing in polar science and developing Polar Journal AG in France and other French-speaking countries. He will also be increasingly “in the field” and will support the development of Polar Journal AG in South America.
  • Julia Hager: Marine biologist Julia Hager is responsible for the German-language content and manages the newly integrated platforms and the mobile app.
