Rothera Station Ready for the Future

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has reached a major milestone in the modernization of the Rothera Research Station on the Antarctic Peninsula. With the full commissioning of the new Discovery Building, a key phase of the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP) has been successfully completed.
For the first time, the Discovery Building brings together essential operational, energy, and medical facilities under one roof. This significantly improves efficiency, sustainability, and long-term resilience at the largest British research station in Antarctica. At the same time, the new infrastructure provides the foundation for continuing internationally important scientific research projects in the polar regions.

A particularly remarkable achievement is the building’s sustainability performance. The Discovery Building is the first structure in Antarctica to receive a BREEAM “Outstanding” certification. This highest level of certification is awarded to only a very small percentage of construction projects worldwide and sets a new benchmark for sustainable building in extreme climatic conditions.
Throughout the construction period, scientific research at Rothera continued without interruption. Long-term environmental monitoring and marine research programs provide crucial data on the impacts of climate change in the Southern Ocean. These include the POLOMINTS project, which investigates how underwater tsunamis triggered by glacier calving affect ocean mixing processes, as well as the Rothera Time Series (RaTS), one of the region’s most significant long-term monitoring programs.
A further focus of the modernization effort was the station’s technical optimization. New heat recovery systems connected to the combined heat and power plant improve energy efficiency and reduce fuel consumption. In addition, a modern building management system enables centralized monitoring and control of all major technical installations. Complementary measures to improve weather resistance and strengthen infrastructure have increased the station’s resilience to Antarctica’s extreme environmental conditions.

With the end of the construction season, extensive demobilization work was carried out. Temporary facilities and construction infrastructure were dismantled, materials were prepared for transport, and former work areas were restored. As a result, the station is now fully prepared for winter operations.
The completion of the Discovery Building represents a significant step forward for British polar research. The modernized infrastructure will continue to enable BAS scientists to gain critical insights into climate, oceans, and ecosystems in one of the most sensitive regions on Earth.
