The new ship of Quark Expeditions

Numerous representatives of state and local authorities were present on May 16, 2020 at the launch of the new expedition ship of Quark Expeditions in Split, Croatia. The ship, built by Brodosplit shipyard, has the serial number 487, will start for polar expeditions and is called “Ultramarine”.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Brodosplit, Tomislav Debeljak, thanked the employees of the shipyard in Split for completing such an important project in the challenging times of the coronavirus. He also thanked Premier Horvat and the Government of the Republic of Croatia for approving three state guarantees and allowing the financing of profitable export projects containing 70 percent of the domestic component. He pointed out that these export projects include not only the employment of more than 2,000 Brodosplitworkers, but also the employment of thousands of workers from suppliers and subcontractors.


“In this way, we have shown the very demanding world market the possibilities of Croatian shipbuilding, that with Brodosplit,complex projects can be realized even in difficult times for the economy,” said Tomislav Debeljak, President of the Management Board of Brodosplit.

The technologically advanced ship for polar expeditions was commissioned by the American company Quark Expeditions, which belongs to the Travelopiagroup that has a number of global companies, that specializes in expedition cruising, in its portfolio.

The “Ultramarin” is 128 meters long and 21.5 meters wide and can accommodate up to 200 passengers, who are cared for by 140 crew members in 103 luxuriously equipped cabins and public spaces. The value of the ship is over 106 million Euro. The loan for the construction was provided by HBOR and the guarantee was granted by the Government of the Republic of Croatia on May 16, 2018 with its decision.

After the delivery of the polar expedition ship “Hondius”, which has completed its first season in the Arctic and Antarctic to the great satisfaction of the owners and users, this new ship will be the new pride of Croatian shipbuilding and will confirm the entry of Brodosplit into the market for passenger ships with a length of up to 200 meters. .
