There’s a lot going on in Murmansk
There is quite a lot going on in the Murmansk region. A new transhipment port for coal and bulk goods with a new rail connection is under construction. Modern train connections to the city of Murmansk included. A new container terminal is also to be built. A fiber optic line through the Northeast Passage to Vladivostok is also under construction. The fiber optic cables will be manufactured immediately in a new plant on site.
Now Rostelecom has also announced that it will begin construction of a new data center in Murmansk early next year. The projected completion date for the project is July 2022.
The data center is the first in the Russian Arctic, according to Rostelecom. The company will invest about 300 million rubles ($4.2 million) in the project.
“We believe that the local centers, will act as an additional locomotive for the digitization of the industry in the regions and the national economy,” said Alexander Loginov, Director of the North-West Region Branch of PJSC Rostelecom.
Aleksandr Loginov also indicated that operating data centres in the Arctic Circle can be more efficient because ‘the low temperatures of the Arctic climate zone can reduce some of the maintenance costs’.
“The amount of data is radically increasing, so such a center will help store and process information,” Murmansk Governor Andrey Chibis said. “The center is necessary for our business, which is also very actively planned today to reduce costs and increase workforce efficiency and productivity.”
Chibis also announced cooperation between the Murmansk Region Government and Rostelecom in other areas, such as the digitalization of medicine, increasing the level of security in educational institutions and training for IT projects.
